Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday called for enhanced security and intelligence partnerships with Tajikistan, underscoring Beijing's concerns about regional stability in Central Asia. During discussions with Tajik officials, Li emphasised the need for coordinated efforts to combat what China characterises as extremism and separatism in the border regions. The appeal reflects Beijing's long-standing security priorities in Central Asia, where cross-border threats have periodically strained regional relations. Li also raised the protection of Chinese citizens operating in Tajikistan, urging the nation to implement stronger safeguard measures. The overture comes amid broader efforts by Beijing to strengthen diplomatic and security ties throughout Central Asia, a region of strategic importance to China's Belt and Road Initiative and broader geopolitical interests. Tajikistan, which shares a lengthy border with China's Xinjiang region, has historically served as a critical partner in Beijing's regional security architecture.
