China's economy is set to underperform against official growth targets in the third quarter, according to widespread economist predictions. While Beijing has set an ambitious annual growth goal of between 4.5% and 5%, forecasts point to third-quarter expansion of 4.4%, reflecting persistent headwinds facing the world's second-largest economy.
The expected figure represents a marginal improvement from the second quarter's 4.3% growth rate, suggesting a gradual stabilisation in economic momentum. However, it falls short of the midpoint of the government's target range, highlighting challenges in sustaining the pace of expansion required to meet full-year objectives.
Economists have attributed the slower-than-target growth to multiple structural and cyclical factors affecting China's economy. These include property sector weakness, subdued domestic consumption, and global trade uncertainties that have dampened business investment and export demand.
The third-quarter performance underscores the mounting pressure on Chinese policymakers to deploy additional stimulus measures to reinvigorate economic activity. Beijing has already implemented several support measures in recent months, though their efficacy in narrowing the gap between actual and targeted growth rates remains to be seen.
