China's export boom: one trillion surplus in sight

Special Reporting from LSN News, adapted from today's Asia Money Map episode. Watch the video on YouTube.

China's exports grew 36.3% in September from a year earlier. Imports rose 31%. The monthly trade surplus hit about $133.5 billion, a twenty-month high. For the first nine months of the year the surplus already stands at $938 billion. Last year China set a record near $1.2 trillion, and this year it is racing back toward that mark.

A September blowout

Customs data released on Wednesday showed exports rising 36.3% year on year, up from 25% in August, ING reports. That beat a Reuters poll calling for about 25.5%, CNBC and Reuters report. Imports climbed 31%, against a poll forecast of about 24.5%. Through September the surplus stands at $938.1 billion, putting China on course to breach $1 trillion again unless shipments slow hard in the fourth quarter, Reuters reports.

Two engines are driving the surge: chips and cars. Semiconductor exports rose 108.1% in value over the first nine months, Reuters reports. In September alone, car exports surged 56.3% to 1.18 million vehicles, with value up 62%, CNBC reports. Global demand for China-made parts for the data centres that power artificial intelligence is doing much of the heavy lifting.

Asia's supply-chain map

Exports to the United States surged 39.6% in September, CNBC and ING report. The monthly surplus with America hit about $34 billion, a twenty-month high, and the surplus with the European Union was larger still at about $34.8 billion, Reuters reports. ING, working from customs data, says exports to ASEAN, China's largest export market, surged 52.3% in September, while shipments to South Korea jumped 68.2%.

For Asia's supply chains, that is both a lift and a warning. The same AI boom filling ports in China is pulling in Korean, Taiwanese and Southeast Asian components, and inviting new trade friction.

The other side of the ledger is weaker. China is selling more but buying less oil by volume. Crude oil import volumes fell 21.5% year on year in September, a sixth straight month of double-digit declines, Reuters and CNBC report. Factory-gate prices rose 5% in September, the fastest pace since June 2022, as fuel costs climbed, CNBC reports. Consumer prices rose only 0.9%. Beijing's export machine is humming; its domestic demand is not.

Pushback, and a surprise in Singapore

Trading partners are already pushing back. Washington and Beijing last month agreed to roll back tariffs on about $30 billion of goods each and to extend their trade truce into January, CNBC and Reuters report. The European Union said last week that China had agreed to halve hybrid-car exports to the bloc. That may bring a rush of shipments before the rules bite in December, Capital Economics warned, according to Reuters.

In Singapore, on the same Wednesday, the Monetary Authority of Singapore held its policy settings. After tightening in April and July, MAS kept the rate of appreciation of the Singapore dollar policy band unchanged, Channel News Asia reports. All ten analysts in a Reuters poll had expected another tightening. MAS said growth should stay firm while the AI cycle runs hot, then moderate as it eases.

The Money Map assessment: China's September print is not just a China story. It is Asia's money map in one release. The region that builds AI hardware is riding the same demand wave that has just delivered Beijing a twenty-month surplus high. But a surplus racing toward $1 trillion will keep Brussels and Washington looking for new levers, and Southeast Asia sits in the middle of those supply chains. Oil volumes into China are falling even as Asia still pays an energy bill. Export strength without domestic demand is a model other capitals will not leave alone forever.

What to watch: the Canton Fair opening this week; follow-through on the European Union hybrid-car deal; the US-China tariff truce into January; and whether ASEAN factories keep gaining from China's chip and data-centre orders or get squeezed by the next round of trade rules.
