China's Manufacturing Momentum Slows as October PMI Dips Below 50
China's factory activity contracted in October as the official manufacturing purchasing managers' index fell to 49.3, signalling renewed economic headwinds. The decline marks a significant slowdown from September's 50.1 reading and underperforms economist expectations, intensifying calls for Beijing to bolster growth.

China's manufacturing sector showed signs of contraction in October, with the official PMI slipping to 49.3 from September's 50.1, data released Monday indicated. The reading fell short of economists' median forecast of 49.9, pointing to weakening factory output and demand across Asia's largest economy.
The services sector also came under pressure, with the non-manufacturing PMI declining to 49.7, suggesting broader economic softness beyond manufacturing. A PMI reading below the 50-point threshold indicates contraction, while anything above signals expansion.
The disappointing figures add to mounting pressure on Chinese policymakers to implement fresh stimulus measures to support economic growth. The world's second-largest economy has faced persistent headwinds from weak domestic demand, property sector challenges, and global trade uncertainties.
The manufacturing contraction could have ripple effects across South and Southeast Asia, given China's role as a major trading partner and source of investment for the region. Analysts are now closely monitoring whether Beijing will announce additional fiscal or monetary support in the coming weeks to arrest the economic slowdown.
