HONG KONG/BEIJING — China's latest round of military leadership changes has prompted scrutiny over potential impacts on the country's operational readiness, even as the moves appear to have strengthened President Xi Jinping's authority over the armed forces.
Diplomats and defence analysts said the removal of senior commanders may have temporarily weakened the People's Liberation Army's war-waging capability by disrupting institutional knowledge and command structures. However, they noted that such personnel changes typically serve to consolidate political control over the military, a critical pillar of Communist Party power.
The purges reflect an ongoing tension within China's defence establishment between maintaining combat effectiveness and ensuring political loyalty to the party's leadership.
