China's trade surplus surges toward record high on Western demand

China's merchandise trade surplus reached US$938.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, positioning the world's second-largest economy to shatter its previous full-year record of US$1.2 trillion set in 2022.

The widening surplus reflects sustained demand from Western markets even as global economic growth remains uneven. Shipments to the United States and European Union have provided particular momentum, offsetting softer domestic consumption and regional trade pressures.

The mounting surplus underscores China's position as a dominant exporter of manufactured goods and reflects structural imbalances in global trade patterns. The figures are likely to intensify scrutiny from trading partners, particularly the United States, which has signalled its intention to reassess bilateral trade relationships.

For regional economies including Malaysia, China's export-driven growth carries mixed implications. While Chinese demand supports commodity shipments and component supplies from Southeast Asian nations, the region's manufacturers also face competition from Chinese exporters in third markets.

Analysts expect the full-year surplus to comfortably exceed US$1.2 trillion if current trends persist through year-end, cementing China's role as the primary driver of global trade imbalances.
