Provinces such as Guizhou are emerging as prime locations for these facilities due to their cooler climates, which reduce cooling costs—a major operational expense for data centres. The regions also offer abundant renewable energy resources and vast tracts of available land, making them ideal for large-scale infrastructure projects.

The shift reflects broader planning to double the nation's data centre capacity within five years as China intensifies competition with the United States in artificial intelligence development. By distributing computing infrastructure across rural areas, Beijing can reduce energy costs and environmental strain while accelerating its AI capabilities.

This decentralised approach also supports China's wider development goals by bringing investment and jobs to less-developed regions.
