Chinese authorities have suspended rescue efforts at the epicentre of a devastating mudslide that struck the China-Nepal border region, with state media citing dangerous flooding conditions as the primary concern.
According to China's state broadcaster CCTV, a substantial lake has formed from enormous accumulations of debris left by the mudslide. The water body has begun overflowing, creating an imminent threat to rescue teams who were mobilising to reach the disaster zone.
The decision to halt operations represents a significant challenge to relief efforts in the affected region. Rescue coordinators must now reassess their approach to reaching survivors and conducting search operations while managing the dual hazards of the unstable debris field and rising water levels.
