China plans to allocate $940 billion towards energy investments in 2026, marking the highest annual commitment globally and underscoring the nation's aggressive strategy to expand its power infrastructure. The investment reflects Beijing's continued prioritization of both renewable and conventional energy sources to meet surging domestic demand and maintain energy security.
The investment surge follows substantial progress in China's renewable energy transition. By the end of 2025, the country had accumulated 2.337 billion kilowatts of installed renewable power capacity, representing 60.1 percent of its total power generation infrastructure. This expansion has positioned China as the undisputed leader in global renewable energy deployment.
China's renewable energy infrastructure growth has global implications, with the country accounting for 63.6 percent of all new renewable installations worldwide during 2025. This dominant share reflects both the scale of China's domestic energy needs and its manufacturing capabilities in solar panels, wind turbines, and battery technology.
The 2026 investment plan signals Beijing's determination to further accelerate the energy transition while addressing electricity demands from rapid industrialisation and urbanisation. Analysts note the spending reflects China's broader strategy to reduce coal dependence and position itself as a clean energy technology leader in global markets.
