China urges citizens to leave Taiwan-aligned African nation

China's Foreign Ministry issued a travel advisory on Wednesday recommending Chinese citizens currently in Eswatini to leave the country, citing vague security risks without providing specific details of the alleged threats.

Eswatini remains one of only 12 nations globally—and the sole African country—to maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan rather than the People's Republic of China. The southern African kingdom has resisted decades of pressure and incentives from Beijing to switch its allegiance.

The advisory marks an intensification of China's diplomatic campaign to isolate Taiwan internationally. Beijing has increasingly targeted Taiwan's remaining allies through economic pressure, diplomatic isolation, and in some cases, public warnings to discourage bilateral engagement.

Eswatini's government has not yet commented on China's advisory. The country's decision to recognize Taiwan has made it a strategic focal point in the broader competition between Beijing and Taipei for international recognition across the African continent.
