China's government has issued a stern warning to Taiwan, insisting the self-ruled island must "bear the consequences" following a water cannon incident involving its Coast Guard and a Chinese fishing boat in the South China Sea.
The confrontation occurred near an atoll in the contested waters, where territorial claims overlap between multiple claimants. A Chinese government spokesperson confirmed the incident on Wednesday, characterizing Taiwan's response as an unwarranted escalation against civilian fishermen.
The incident underscores persistent tensions in the strategically vital South China Sea, where rival claims to islands, reefs and waters have repeatedly sparked confrontations between vessels from China, Taiwan and other regional nations. Beijing has historically taken a firm stance against what it characterizes as interference with its citizens' fishing activities in the region.
Taiwan's Coast Guard has not yet issued a detailed public response to Beijing's accusations. The island has historically justified such enforcement actions as maintaining order in waters it considers under its jurisdiction.
The water cannon incident joins a growing list of maritime encounters in the South China Sea that have heightened regional tensions and drawn international concern over freedom of navigation and adherence to international maritime protocols.
