Chinese diving instructor detained over endangered turtle killing in Indonesia
Indonesian authorities have arrested a Chinese diving instructor accused of illegally killing and consuming a critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle in a protected marine reserve. The incident occurred in the Raja Ampat conservation area, one of the world's most biodiverse marine ecosystems.

The suspect was apprehended following the alleged incident in the Raja Ampat marine protected area in eastern Indonesia, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its exceptional marine biodiversity. Authorities say the diving instructor killed the hawksbill turtle, a species classified as critically endangered by international conservation bodies, and subsequently consumed it.
Raja Ampat, located in West Papua province, encompasses roughly 40,000 square kilometers of ocean and is home to thousands of marine species found nowhere else on Earth. The area is subject to strict environmental protections, with regulations prohibiting the hunting, capture, or killing of endangered wildlife.
The alleged violation highlights ongoing challenges authorities face in enforcing marine conservation laws across Indonesian waters. Hawksbill sea turtles, prized historically for their shells, face severe threats from poaching, habitat loss, and accidental capture in fishing nets. The species has declined dramatically over recent decades, with populations now numbering in the tens of thousands globally.
