Chinese firm awarded contract for BIA aviation fuel infrastructure project
Cabinet has approved the award of a major aviation fuel storage and transport contract to China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Company Limited. The project will establish a new fuel supply system connecting Muthurajawela to Bandaranaike International Airport.

The Cabinet has granted final approval for China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Company Limited to undertake construction of an integrated aviation fuel storage and distribution system linking Muthurajawela to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The contract covers the development of a 92,000 cubic metre fuel storage tank complex at Muthurajawela, along with associated pipeline infrastructure to transport fuel to Sri Lanka's primary international airport. The project received initial Cabinet clearance in July 2024 and now moves forward to the implementation phase.
The new system is designed to enhance the airport's fuel supply infrastructure and streamline logistics for aviation operations. The Muthurajawela storage facility will serve as a central distribution hub, with dedicated transportation pipelines ensuring efficient delivery to BIA's fuelling requirements.
The appointment of the Chinese engineering firm represents a significant infrastructure investment in aviation sector support facilities. The project is expected to improve operational efficiency at the airport and strengthen the reliability of fuel supply for international and domestic flight operations.
