Chinese genetic sequencing company Novogene has initiated legal proceedings against the US Department of Defense, contesting its placement on a military blacklist. The company argues that the Pentagon's decision lacks justification and has inflicted substantial harm to its business operations and standing.
Novogene operates a significant presence in the United States through its subsidiary, which maintains approximately 180 employees across facilities in Sacramento, California, and Beaverton, Oregon. The company provides genetic sequencing services and research capabilities from these locations.
In its legal challenge, Novogene categorically denies any connection to military applications or defence-related work. "Novogene does not design, develop, or market products for military use," the company stated in court filings. The firm contends that the blacklist designation is unwarranted and has caused "serious, irreparable" economic consequences alongside damage to its reputation.
The lawsuit reflects growing tensions between Chinese technology companies and US defence authorities, which have increasingly scrutinized foreign firms over national security concerns. Novogene's challenge raises questions about the criteria used by the Pentagon in determining military associations and the due process available to companies contesting such designations.
