The World Humanoid Robot Games, now in its second edition, opened Monday at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing, showcasing China's accelerating capabilities in advanced robotics. The competition features 51 events encompassing more than 1,000 individual contests spanning running, table tennis, and soccer, with participants demonstrating performances that exceed previously established human records.
The games serve as a prominent platform for displaying China's technological progress amid intensifying competition with the United States in robotics and artificial intelligence development. The five-day event drew more than 2,000 humanoid robots from participating teams and organizations, according to organizers.
The timing of the World Humanoid Robot Games coincides with Beijing's hosting of the 2026 World Robot Conference, where technology companies are exhibiting approximately 3,000 products, including advanced humanoid robot models. China currently manufactures the majority of the world's humanoid robots, a dominance that has drawn increased scrutiny from U.S. regulators concerned about technology transfer and national security implications.
The competitions highlight rapid advancements in robotics engineering, materials science, and artificial intelligence algorithms that enable machines to replicate and exceed human physical capabilities across diverse athletic disciplines.
