TAIPEI - A Chinese militia vessel was spotted alongside two other ships off Taiwan's eastern seaboard in August, according to surveillance findings, representing the first confirmed detection of such a craft in the area.
The sighting underscores growing maritime tensions in waters surrounding Taiwan, where Chinese vessels have intensified patrols in recent years. Taiwan's coast guard and maritime authorities maintain constant surveillance of approaches to the island, which China claims as its own territory.
The presence of militia boats—civilian vessels operating under loose state coordination—adds a new dimension to Chinese maritime operations near Taiwan. These craft typically operate in gray zones between civilian and military activity, complicating security assessments.
The August incident was documented in patrol reports reviewed by international monitoring agencies. It occurred as Beijing has ramped up military exercises and increased the frequency of naval operations in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding waters.
Taiwan's Defence Ministry has previously warned of escalating Chinese military activities, including regular incursions by fighter jets and naval vessels. Officials in Taipei have called for enhanced international support and reaffirmed the island's commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
