Chinese students fall victim to rental scams by Bangkok condo agents
Chinese nationals studying in Bangkok have reported being defrauded by condominium rental agents through misleading agreements and unauthorized charges. Authorities are investigating multiple cases involving false deposits and contract violations.

A growing number of Chinese students enrolled at educational institutions throughout Bangkok have lodged complaints with consumer protection agencies regarding fraudulent practices by residential rental agents. The students reported being charged excessive fees, misled about rental terms, and losing security deposits under questionable circumstances.
The scheme typically involves agents advertising condominiums at competitive rates to attract foreign tenants, then imposing additional undisclosed charges or altering contract terms after initial agreements are reached. Several victims reported difficulty recovering deposits claimed to be forfeited due to supposed contract violations they did not commit.
Investigators have found that some agents operate without proper licensing and maintain inadequate documentation of rental agreements. The cases have prompted calls for stronger oversight of the condominium rental sector and clearer protections for foreign renters navigating Thailand's housing market.
Consumer protection officials have advised international students to verify agent credentials through official channels, maintain copies of all documentation, and seek legal counsel before signing agreements. Educational institutions with large numbers of Chinese students have been advised to provide rental guidance resources to their international enrollment offices.
