Chlorine gas leak at Nagpur water treatment plant sends several to hospital

A leakage from a 900-kilogram capacity chlorine gas cylinder at the water treatment plant in Godhani village prompted an emergency response from local authorities early Monday morning. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation confirmed the incident, which resulted in several people requiring hospitalization for exposure to the toxic gas.

Emergency teams were deployed to the facility shortly after the leak was detected around 1 a.m. The plant, which supplies treated water to the city, was immediately secured to prevent further exposure and allow for the safe containment of the hazardous chemical.

Chlorine is widely used in water treatment processes to eliminate pathogens and ensure water safety for public consumption. Inhalation of chlorine gas can cause respiratory distress and other health complications, particularly in individuals exposed to high concentrations.
