Chlorine leak at Nagpur water plant sends residents to hospitals
A chlorine gas leak at a water treatment facility in Nagpur early Monday morning forced the evacuation of nearby residents and left multiple people requiring medical attention. The incident occurred shortly after midnight at the Godhani village plant operated by the city's municipal authorities.

The leak originated from a 900-kilogram capacity chlorine gas cylinder at the water treatment plant in Godhani village around 1 am on Monday, according to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The toxic gas quickly spread to adjacent residential areas, triggering widespread panic among local inhabitants.
Residents in the vicinity experienced symptoms including persistent coughing and breathing difficulties. Emergency responders evacuated all residents within a 200-meter radius of the plant and established a safety perimeter around the affected zone. Multiple individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for medical evaluation and treatment.
Fire personnel from the NMC reached the site equipped with two water tenders and breathing apparatus to contain the situation. Staff from Orange City Water Pvt Ltd (OCW), which manages drinking water supply across Nagpur, coordinated response efforts at the facility. The quick mobilisation of emergency services prevented further casualties and helped restore normalcy to the area.
