Cigarette manufacturers have announced another round of price increases, adding further pressure on consumer wallets across India. Gold Flake Premium, one of the country's widely-consumed premium cigarette brands, has emerged as a notable casualty of the hikes, with prices climbing substantially since the beginning of the year.
The cumulative impact of successive price adjustments has pushed Gold Flake Premium to Rs 135 per 10-cigarette pack, up from Rs 115 at the start of the year. This represents a sharp 17.4 percent increase in less than twelve months, reflecting the mounting cost pressures faced by the tobacco industry.
The repeated price hikes underscore the volatility in the cigarette market, driven by various factors including raw material costs, taxation changes, and manufacturing expenses. Consumers of premium brands have borne the brunt of these adjustments more acutely than those purchasing budget variants.
Industry watchers suggest that further price movements may be on the horizon as manufacturers grapple with inflationary pressures. The trend is likely to persist as long as underlying cost factors remain elevated in the supply chain.
