CII charts path to close $36 billion gap in media and entertainment sector
The Confederation of Indian Industry has outlined a strategic roadmap to bridge the shortfall between India's current media and entertainment trajectory and its $100 billion sectoral ambition. Accelerating annual growth from 9 per cent to 15.3 per cent will require coordinated policy reforms, improved monetisation strategies, and substantial investment in intellectual property development.

India's media and entertainment sector faces a significant challenge in meeting its stated $100 billion growth target, with a projected $36 billion gap that demands urgent intervention, according to a new industry blueprint released by the CII.
The confederation's roadmap identifies the need to substantially accelerate the sector's growth trajectory to bridge this divide. Current annual expansion rates of 9 per cent fall considerably short of the 15.3 per cent growth rate necessary to achieve the sector's ambitious goals within the envisioned timeframe.
The CII has pinpointed four critical pillars to drive this acceleration. Comprehensive policy reforms must create a more favourable regulatory environment, while enhanced monetisation mechanisms will unlock additional revenue streams. Simultaneously, the sector requires significant capital investment and a concerted focus on developing India's intellectual property ecosystem to create globally competitive content and digital products.
Industry analysts note that closing the gap will require coordinated action from policymakers, content creators, technology platforms, and financial institutions. The roadmap represents a consensus view among industry stakeholders on the investments and systemic changes necessary to position India's media and entertainment sector as a major global player.
