CIIL unveils open-source speech AI toolkit for Indian languages
The Central Institute of Indian Languages has launched Anuvani, an open-source artificial intelligence ecosystem designed to process India's diverse linguistic landscape. The initiative introduces foundational speech models for language identification and speaker diarisation across multiple Indian language groups.

The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) has introduced Anuvani, a significant step toward democratising speech technology development for India's linguistic diversity. The open-source ecosystem provides researchers, developers and technology companies with access to foundational artificial intelligence models tailored for Indian language processing, marking an effort to address the technology gap that has historically favoured English and other major global languages.
Anuvani's initial release focuses on two critical speech processing capabilities: language identification and speaker diarisation. Language identification enables systems to automatically detect which language is being spoken, a foundational requirement for multilingual speech applications. Speaker diarisation technology determines who is speaking at any given moment in an audio recording—a capability essential for applications ranging from meeting transcription to broadcast monitoring.
The toolkit's emphasis on open-source architecture aims to foster collaborative development within India's technology ecosystem. By making these models freely available, CIIL seeks to encourage innovation among startups, academic institutions and technology firms working on speech-enabled services for Indian languages. This approach contrasts with proprietary systems that have traditionally concentrated speech AI development among well-resourced international technology companies.
India's linguistic complexity presents both challenge and opportunity for artificial intelligence development. With hundreds of languages and thousands of dialects spoken across the country, speech technology adapted to Indian contexts requires substantial investment in model development and training data curation. Anuvani positions itself as infrastructure for addressing this diversity at scale, potentially enabling downstream applications in education, healthcare, governance and commerce.
