A prominent citizens' group announced Tuesday that it would organize a major protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on October 10 if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign from his position.
The announcement marks an escalation in pressure on the electoral administrator, with organizers framing the demonstration as a critical show of public dissatisfaction with his leadership of the Election Commission.
Speaking to reporters, organizers emphasized that the demonstration would remain peaceful and called on the Delhi government and police to respect constitutional rights to assembly. They drew implicit reference to an earlier confrontation on July 20, warning against any repetition of what they characterized as excessive force.
"Whether authorities respect our right to peaceful protest or resort to the brutality we saw previously is now their choice," organizers stated, placing responsibility squarely on law enforcement and government officials to ensure the October 10 gathering proceeds without incident.
The protest announcement comes amid broader questions about governance at the Election Commission, India's constitutionally mandated body responsible for conducting national and state elections.
