CITU urges government to shelve Ramayapatnam Port privatisation plan

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has raised concerns over plans to privatise Ramayapatnam Port, arguing that the timing of such a move is questionable given the project's advanced stage of completion.

According to CITU leaders, construction work on the port has reached 80.55% completion, positioning the facility to generate substantial revenues for the government. The union questioned the rationale behind pursuing privatisation when the port is on the verge of becoming operational.

"At a time when the port can generate revenues, why is the government attempting to privatise it?" asked CITU representatives, emphasising concerns over who would ultimately benefit from the proposed privatisation move.

The opposition reflects broader apprehensions within trade union circles about the potential implications of handing over critical infrastructure projects to private entities. CITU's stance aligns with concerns raised by labour organisations regarding privatisation of public sector assets and its impact on employment and public interest.

The government has not yet issued an official response to the union's objections regarding the Ramayapatnam Port privatisation proposal.
