City weathers first major monsoon deluge with minimal disruption

The city navigated its first severe monsoon spell with limited impact on residents and traffic flow, according to municipal authorities. Floodwaters that accumulated during the heavy rainfall subsided across most neighborhoods by dawn, though low-lying areas including Perambur and Velachery experienced prolonged inundation.

Emergency response teams worked overnight to restore critical transport infrastructure. All 22 subway underpasses, which had been temporarily closed to prevent vehicle damage, were cleared and reopened to traffic by 6 a.m. on Sunday, enabling normal commuter operations to resume.

While the rainfall caused considerable waterlogging and resulted in more than 10 trees being uprooted across different localities, no rain-related deaths or major accidents were recorded during the event. Civic officials attributed the absence of casualties to rapid drainage measures and public adherence to weather warnings.

The successful management of the initial monsoon surge underscores the city's improved preparedness for the seasonal weather system. However, authorities remain vigilant as the full monsoon season unfolds, with enhanced monitoring systems in place to handle potential further deluges.
