Civil marriage registration does not replace religious leaders, JPN clarifies

The National Registration Department (JPN) has moved to dispel concerns that civil marriage registration for non-Muslim couples undermines the authority of religious leaders. The clarification comes as the department emphasizes the distinction between legal registration and religious solemnization of marriages. According to JPN, non-Muslim couples must have their marriages solemnized and registered in accordance with applicable laws to establish valid marital status. The registration process serves purely administrative and legal purposes, JPN stated, and operates independently of any religious ceremonies or leadership roles. Officials noted that civil registration ensures couples enjoy full legal recognition and protection under Malaysian law, including rights pertaining to inheritance, healthcare decisions, and other matrimonial matters. The distinction is particularly relevant in Malaysia's multi-religious context, where different communities follow their own customs and religious protocols. JPN's clarification aims to address misunderstandings about the scope and purpose of civil marriage registration procedures.
