The Public Service Division (PSD) has confirmed it is reviewing an academic paper alleging that government employees acquired residential properties at higher rates near planned but publicly unannounced Mass Rapid Transit extensions. The examination comes as part of the civil service's commitment to upholding ethical standards and preventing conflicts of interest among its workforce.
According to the PSD, the department will carefully assess the findings presented in the research document. Should the review identify any material basis for concern regarding potential wrongdoing, the matter will be referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) for further investigation.
The assertion that civil servants may have possessed advance knowledge of transport infrastructure projects raises questions about information asymmetry within government. MRT station announcements are typically made following formal Cabinet approvals and ministerial announcements, making early acquisition of properties in these areas potentially problematic if based on confidential government planning.
The CPIB, Singapore's independent anti-corruption agency, routinely investigates allegations of graft and abuse of power within the public sector.
