COTABATO CITY — A national multisectoral coalition supporting the Bangsamoro peace process has greeted the commencement of the first elected parliament in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), marking a pivotal moment in the region's political transition.
Duyog Bangsamoro, comprising 15 civil society organizations, issued a statement Sunday celebrating the convening of the 80-member Bangsamoro Parliament. The body represents the first democratically elected legislature for the autonomous region, succeeding the interim Bangsamoro Transition Authority that previously governed the area.
The establishment of an elected parliament represents a critical phase in implementing the Bangsamoro peace agreement, which aimed to address decades of conflict in Mindanao and provide the region with enhanced autonomy and self-governance mechanisms.
The coalition's endorsement underscores civil society's role in monitoring and supporting the region's political development. Such multisectoral coalitions have been instrumental in advocating for transparency and inclusive governance throughout the Bangsamoro peace process.
