CJI calls for identifying, supporting underprivileged law students

Chief Justice Surya Kant has urged organisers and educational institutions to proactively identify poor students with ambitions to study and practice law, emphasizing the importance of providing them with financial support to realise their aspirations.

Speaking at a national conference focused on B.R. Ambedkar, India's principal architect of the Constitution, CJI Kant highlighted the critical need to ensure that economic barriers do not prevent talented individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds from entering the legal profession.

The remarks underscore the judiciary's commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity within the Indian legal system. Ambedkar, himself a pioneering jurist who overcame significant social obstacles, remains a symbol of the transformative potential of legal education and practice.

The CJI's intervention reflects broader concerns within India's legal fraternity about ensuring equal access to legal education and professional opportunities regardless of socioeconomic status. Financial constraints have historically limited the pool of law students to relatively privileged sections of society, a challenge the Chief Justice has flagged as requiring concerted institutional action.
