Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has declined a meeting with Congress leaders seeking to raise concerns over alleged electoral discrepancies and protests against the Chief Election Commissioner. In a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, the CJI stated that matters already pending before the Supreme Court cannot be discussed outside of formal judicial proceedings.
The Congress delegation had sought to present a memorandum to the Chief Justice on issues related to electoral irregularities and the ongoing agitation demanding action against the Chief Election Commissioner. However, the CJI's response indicated that such matters must be pursued through the proper legal channels available within the court system.
The letter reflects the judiciary's established protocol of maintaining distance from political engagement on issues that are actively under judicial consideration. By directing the Congress leaders to pursue their concerns through formal legal proceedings, the CJI reaffirmed the separation of powers and the court's position on matters at various stages of litigation.
This development comes amid broader political tensions between the ruling government and the opposition Congress party over electoral practices and the functioning of India's election management body. The CJI's response underscores the Supreme Court's consistent stance on not entertaining extrajudicial representations on cases already filed before it.
