Chief Justice Surya Kant has declined a request to meet with representatives of the INDIA opposition bloc, reaffirming the judiciary's institutional boundaries ahead of the coalition's scheduled march. According to sources, the CJI clarified that the court lacks the authority to hold administrative-level meetings with political delegations.

The Chief Justice emphasized that the judiciary's constitutional role is limited to hearing petitions and delivering verdicts on matters brought before it. This institutional separation, he indicated, precludes the kind of bilateral engagement sought by the opposition alliance.

The refusal underscores the judiciary's stance on maintaining distance from political actors and processes. By declining the meeting, the CJI reinforced longstanding principles regarding judicial independence and the separation of powers that define India's constitutional framework.

The INDIA bloc, an alliance of multiple opposition parties, had apparently sought the meeting with the country's top judge. The coalition has been increasingly active in organizing demonstrations and coordinating political responses to government policies. The timing of the rejected meeting, occurring just before the planned march, highlighted the sharp boundaries between India's political and judicial institutions.
