Saurav Das, a prominent figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has levelled serious charges against Delhi Police, claiming he was abducted, stripped of his mobile phone, and denied access to legal counsel during his detention. Das alleged that authorities acted with high-handedness, undermining his fundamental rights as a citizen. The detention has reignited tensions between the party leadership and the central government over issues of civil liberties and due process. Das and other party members acknowledged they anticipated possible detention given their activism and opposition to government policies, but stated they did not expect the manner in which the police action was conducted. The allegations have drawn scrutiny to policing practices and the treatment of political detainees in the capital. The incident comes amid ongoing disputes between various political parties and the Centre over questions of institutional autonomy and respect for constitutional safeguards. Police and government responses to the allegations were not immediately available.
