CJP leaders remanded to custody; founder questions charges over flag hoisting

Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, prominent figures within the Communist Party of India (Marxist), were sent to five days of judicial custody at Tihar Jail on Thursday. The remand follows their alleged participation in hoisting India's national flag at the Jantar Mantar protest site in New Delhi. Party founder Abhijit Dipke has disputed the charges, arguing that displaying the tricolor flag should not be treated as a punishable offense. Dipke termed the police action as misguided and questioned the legal basis for detaining party members over the flag-hoisting incident. The development marks an escalation in tensions between the party and authorities over recent protest activities at the capital's key demonstration zone. The party has indicated it may challenge the remand order through legal proceedings, maintaining that the activists' actions were within constitutional rights.
