The two CJP leaders filed a plea seeking a night hearing at the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, as the court remains closed for the Dussehra vacation this week. Their request came after a Special Executive Magistrate at Mandir Marg police station extended their judicial remand by two additional days following their production before him on Monday.
Das and Ranka were arrested on October 13 after allegedly scaling a locked gate to enter Jantar Mantar, the Delhi protest site that had been denotified as a designated demonstration venue. They were initially remanded to five-day judicial custody following the incident.
Ratna Singh, the party's legal affairs head, stated in a post on social media that the CJP has moved the high court in an urgent bid to secure their release. "Saurav and Ashutosh should not spend a single minute behind bars. Their liberty must not be curtailed because of political games," Singh said, characterizing the arrests as motivated by political considerations rather than legal grounds.
The case highlights ongoing tensions in Delhi surrounding protest regulations and the enforcement of restrictions at Jantar Mantar, a historically significant protest location that witnessed frequent demonstrations by various political groups prior to its denotification.
