CK Hutchison demands US$1.5 billion from Panama over port concession

CK Hutchison Holdings, one of Asia's largest multinational conglomerates, is pursuing substantial damages against the Panamanian government following the cancellation of its port operating concession. The claim, exceeding US$1.5 billion, argues that Panama has violated international treaty obligations in terminating the agreement.

The dispute emerged amid heightened geopolitical tensions surrounding the Panama Canal. The United States has expressed concerns that Chinese entities could gain controlling influence over the strategically vital waterway, which handles approximately 5 per cent of global maritime trade. Panama's decision to revoke the Hong Kong company's concession reflects these broader security considerations.

CK Hutchison, which operates extensive port facilities across Asia and maintains significant infrastructure investments globally, contends that the cancellation was unjustified and breaches protections afforded under bilateral investment treaties. The company is pursuing international arbitration to recover losses stemming from the termination.
