Climate agency urges schools, offices to adjust schedules for El Niño

MANILA — The Climate Change Commission (CCC) on Tuesday called for schools and government offices to revise their schedules in anticipation of El Niño's effects on the country. CCC Commissioner Albert dela Cruz suggested in remarks that educational institutions should consider adjusting their timetables as part of broader preparedness measures being implemented by local government units.

The recommendation comes as meteorological forecasts point to the development of El Niño conditions, which typically bring drier weather and elevated temperatures to large parts of the Philippines. The phenomenon has historically caused water shortages, agricultural challenges, and other climate-related disruptions across the region.

By shifting schedules proactively, officials believe institutions can better protect students, employees, and the general public from potential heat-related health risks and other adverse weather impacts. The CCC's guidance forms part of a coordinated national response strategy involving multiple government agencies and local government units.

Authorities have urged both public and private institutions to take necessary precautions and work with their respective local government units to implement climate adaptation measures. The commission is expected to release additional guidance and recommendations as El Niño conditions develop.
