Scientists studying the deadly flooding event have concluded there is no doubt that climate change played a significant role in the disaster, according to findings from a comprehensive analysis of meteorological conditions in the affected area.
The research identified July and August 2026 as the warmest months on record for the region, creating conditions conducive to rapid snowmelt and water accumulation. These elevated temperatures compounded the effects of heavy snowfall that had occurred in late 2025, substantially increasing meltwater volumes in the weeks preceding the catastrophic event.
The combination of record heat and excess meltwater from the previous season's heavy snow created a dangerous convergence of factors that ultimately triggered the collapse resulting in significant loss of life and widespread damage across the border communities.
The findings underscore growing concerns about climate change impacts in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region, where rising temperatures are accelerating snow and glacial melt patterns.
