Mount Kailash, nestled in the remote Himalayas along the Nepal-Tibet border, holds profound spiritual significance for both Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist communities. Each year, tens of thousands of devotees undertake arduous pilgrimages to circumambulate the 6,638-metre peak, viewing the journey as an essential spiritual practice. However, climate change is fundamentally altering the landscape and risks facing these sacred journeys.

Rising temperatures are accelerating glacial melt across the Himalayan region, destabilising mountain terrain and creating dangerous conditions for pilgrims. The increased water runoff has heightened the frequency and severity of flash floods and landslides along traditional pilgrimage routes, transforming what pilgrims view as a path to inner peace into a potentially life-threatening undertaking.

The environmental changes pose a dilemma for regional authorities and spiritual communities. While the pilgrimage routes cannot be easily relocated due to their sacred significance, officials are increasingly concerned about pilgrim safety during the trekking season. Local governments have begun implementing monitoring systems and warning mechanisms to alert travellers to hazardous conditions.

Experts warn that without significant action on climate change, the Kailash region will face continued environmental degradation. The melting of Himalayan glaciers threatens not only pilgrims but also water supplies for millions of people across South and Southeast Asia who depend on river systems fed by these ice reserves. The challenge remains balancing religious and cultural traditions with the pressing need to adapt to a rapidly changing climate.
