CMFRI science hub launches 84 micro-enterprises across eight districts

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has successfully channelled its science and technology innovation hub towards establishing 84 micro-enterprises spread across eight districts, according to official communications from the institute. The initiative has created direct economic benefits for 469 individuals, comprising 220 women and six transpersons among the beneficiaries.

The micro-enterprise development scheme represents a targeted approach to leveraging scientific innovation for livelihood creation, particularly among marginalized communities. By linking technology solutions with entrepreneurial support, the programme has enabled participating households to diversify income sources and strengthen economic resilience.

Data compiled by CMFRI indicates that beneficiary households have experienced significant income growth as a result of the initiative. Incomes among programme participants have risen by between 30 and 35 percent, reflecting the economic viability of the enterprises established with institutional support. The results underscore the potential for science-backed interventions to generate sustainable livelihood opportunities in coastal and rural communities.

The eight-district spread of these micro-enterprises demonstrates the scalability of the model, suggesting scope for replication across other regions. The inclusion of women and transpersons in the beneficiary pool highlights the inclusive design of the CMFRI initiative, addressing both economic development and social equity objectives.
