Coal India boosts September output as power sector demand surges

Coal India Limited reported a 9.18 per cent increase in overall coal production during September, reaching 53.5 million tonnes, driven by robust demand from the power generation sector.

Supplies specifically directed to thermal power plants jumped 10.63 per cent year-on-year to 48.9 million tonnes during the same month, outpacing the growth in total production. The differential indicates the company's prioritization of the power sector amid mounting electricity consumption across Indian states.

The production gains underscore Coal India's efforts to sustain domestic energy supply chains as power demand accelerates. The state miner, which accounts for roughly three-quarters of India's coal output, has been working to enhance extraction and distribution capabilities to support the nation's power generation infrastructure.

Increased coal supplies to power plants are critical as India's electricity demand continues to climb due to economic growth, urbanization, and rising consumption across industrial and residential sectors. Power utilities have been pressing for consistent fuel availability to maintain grid stability and prevent supply constraints.
