Coal India Limited has established CIL Global, a Singapore-based subsidiary, to spearhead the company's foray into critical minerals exploration and acquisition worldwide. The move signals a strategic pivot by India's largest coal producer to diversify its portfolio and reduce dependence on traditional coal business segments.
The newly formed entity will be tasked with identifying and evaluating overseas critical mineral opportunities that align with Coal India's long-term growth objectives. Critical minerals—including rare earths, lithium, cobalt, and other elements essential for modern technology and renewable energy applications—are increasingly sought by nations seeking to secure supply chains independent of geopolitical pressures.
By establishing operations in Singapore, a global financial hub with extensive mining and commodities networks, Coal India positions itself to tap into deal-making channels and leverage regional expertise in mineral acquisitions. The subsidiary will manage investments and oversee due diligence for overseas assets.
The diversification effort reflects broader industry trends across India's state-run enterprises, which are exploring non-coal revenue streams amid global energy transition pressures and domestic renewable energy expansion targets. Critical minerals command premium valuations and offer exposure to growing demand from electric vehicle manufacturing, renewable energy infrastructure, and advanced technology sectors.
