Coal India meets NTPC supply targets despite depleted reserves
Coal India Limited has rejected suggestions of supply shortages to NTPC, stating it delivered 97 million tonnes in the first half of the fiscal year while exceeding contractual obligations. The assertion comes amid concerns over critically low coal inventories at several thermal power stations.

Coal India Limited (CIL) has dismissed reports of supply constraints affecting the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), maintaining that it fulfilled its commitments during the first six months of FY2026-27. The state-owned miner supplied 97 million tonnes of coal to NTPC and its joint venture entities during the period, according to CIL officials.
The company's statement underscores efforts to reassure stakeholders about its capacity to sustain India's power sector amid broader energy security concerns. CIL emphasized that deliveries exceeded the volumes stipulated under existing supply agreements, despite mounting pressure on coal reserves at various thermal generating stations across the country.
However, critically low stock levels reported at multiple power plants have fueled industry concerns about the adequacy of coal supply chains. Power utilities have flagged the need for improved logistics and production coordination to ensure consistent fuel availability as India's electricity demand continues to rise.
The development reflects ongoing tensions between coal producers and power generators over supply reliability and inventory management. NTPC, India's largest thermal power generator, remains dependent on steady coal supplies to maintain operational efficiency across its generating fleet.
CIL, which accounts for over 80 percent of India's domestic coal production, faces persistent pressure to ramp up output while managing constraints in mining capacity and infrastructure. The company's performance during the first half of FY27 will be closely monitored as indicators of the sector's ability to meet India's growing energy needs.
