Coal India production surges 19.3% in October to 67.2 million tonnes

Coal India Ltd (CIL) posted a strong monthly performance in October, with coal production reaching 67.2 million tonnes, marking a 19.3 percent year-on-year increase from 56.4 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year, according to provisional data filed with stock exchanges on Sunday.

Offtake figures painted an equally positive picture, with Coal India dispatching 70.3 million tonnes in October, up 18.7 percent from 59.2 million tonnes a year ago. The elevated offtake levels suggest sustained demand for domestic coal supplies across the nation's power generation and industrial sectors.

For the April-October period of fiscal 2026-27, the state-owned miner's cumulative production inched up marginally by 0.7 percent to 388.2 million tonnes compared to 385.5 million tonnes in the year-ago period. However, offtake during the same seven-month window demonstrated stronger momentum, expanding 9.2 percent to 454.6 million tonnes from 416.2 million tonnes previously.

Among CIL's six subsidiaries, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd led in absolute volume with October output of 20.8 million tonnes, climbing 25.3 percent year-on-year. South Eastern Coalfields Ltd produced 14.3 million tonnes, up 17.4 percent, while Western Coalfields Ltd posted the highest growth rate at 64.7 percent, reaching 5.9 million tonnes. Central Coalfields Ltd output rose 26.1 percent to 7.3 million tonnes and Eastern Coalfields Ltd increased production 27.9 percent to 4.6 million tonnes.
