Coal India Limited, India's largest coal producer, has initiated steps to divest a portion of its stake in South Eastern Coalfields Limited by filing a DRHP with market regulators. The proposed offering involves the sale of 66.81 crore shares, representing a 10 percent dilution of the parent company's ownership in the subsidiary.
The IPO filing comes as Coal India looks to raise capital and broaden the shareholder base of SECL, one of its key operating subsidiaries. Following the share sale, Coal India's stake in SECL would be reduced from its current level to 90 percent, allowing institutional and retail investors to participate in the subsidiary's equity.
The announcement reflects Coal India's financial position, with the company reporting a net profit of ₹4,754.59 crore for the financial year ended March 2026. The divestment represents part of a broader strategy by the state-owned enterprise to optimize its portfolio and unlock value from its subsidiaries.
The DRHP filing marks the formal commencement of the regulatory approval process for the IPO. Market regulators and shareholders will now review the proposal, following which the company can proceed toward finalizing the offer details and launch timeline. The listing of SECL would provide investors with direct exposure to one of India's major coal extraction operations.
