Three workers died and three others sustained injuries when a coal pile collapsed at the Kathara colliery in Jharkhand on Tuesday, according to Central Coalfield Limited (CCL) officials.
The incident occurred during what authorities described as unauthorized coal extraction activities at the mine. Officials indicated that the collapse was directly connected to illicit mining operations, which had destabilized the structural integrity of the accumulated coal stock.
Emergency responders reached the site promptly and initiated rescue operations to extract workers from the debris. The three injured individuals were subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment.
CCL has initiated a preliminary investigation into the incident. The collapse underscores ongoing concerns about safety practices and the prevalence of illegal mining activities at coal extraction sites across the region, which frequently compromise worker safety and operational standards.
The identities of the deceased and their employment status have not been immediately disclosed by the authorities.
