Coal supplies to power plants surge 36% from September lows
India's coal supply to thermal power plants has rebounded sharply, with rail loading reaching 465 rakes daily. The Coal Ministry expects further moderation in stock depletion and power demand as seasonal trends shift mid-October.

Coal supplies to India's power generation facilities have climbed 36 percent from their September lows, signaling improved availability of the critical fuel as the nation heads into the final quarter of the financial year. The recovery has been supported by enhanced rail transportation infrastructure, with daily loading reaching 465 rakes—a key metric tracking coal movement from mines to thermal power plants.
The Coal Ministry attributed the improvement to coordinated efforts in boosting supply chain efficiency and addressing earlier logistical constraints. Rail loading represents a critical bottleneck in India's coal distribution network, and the current performance levels indicate that transportation capacity has expanded to meet growing seasonal demand.
Looking ahead, ministry officials anticipate that both coal stock depletion rates and power demand will moderate in mid-October, consistent with historical seasonal patterns. The moderating demand typically reflects transitional weather conditions and reduced cooling requirements as the monsoon season wanes and pre-winter conditions take hold across much of the country.
These developments suggest that India's thermal power sector, which remains dependent on coal for approximately 70 percent of electricity generation, should maintain adequate fuel supplies through the October-December period. The rebound in coal logistics also alleviates concerns raised in early September when supplies had fallen to seasonal lows, potentially constraining power generation capacity during peak summer demand months ahead.
