Coastal Andhra Pradesh braces for second day of heavy downpours

Continuous heavy rainfall pounded Srikakulam district for a second consecutive day on Wednesday, with Vajrapukotturu village recording the highest precipitation at 88.25 millimetres. The spell of intense weather has prompted state meteorological authorities to issue orange alerts across four districts in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Meteorological Department has placed Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Anakapalli, and Alluri Sitarama Raju districts on orange alert, indicating the possibility of significant weather disruption in the coming hours. Local administration officials said the heavy downpours are expected to persist, necessitating precautionary measures across the affected regions.

In response to the severe weather forecast, educational authorities have mandated the closure of all schools and educational institutions in the four districts. The decision aims to ensure student and staff safety during the period of intense rainfall, with officials advising residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

District authorities have activated disaster management protocols and are maintaining round-the-clock vigilance to handle any emergencies arising from the weather system. Drainage channels and water management infrastructure in vulnerable areas have been cleared to mitigate potential flooding risks.
