Cochin Port provides dredged sand for Vallarpadam project resettlement sites

The Cochin Port Authority (CoPA) has released dredged sand reserves to fortify three resettlement sites earmarked for families displaced by the Vallarpadam container terminal development project. The assistance marks a significant development in addressing longstanding concerns raised by project-affected residents awaiting rehabilitation.

In correspondence with the Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, the port authority sought details regarding the agency and contractor responsible for the rehabilitation work, along with relevant work orders. The move is intended to ensure the resettlement colonies are adequately prepared to accommodate the displaced population.

The Vallarpadam project, a major maritime infrastructure initiative in Kochi, has necessitated the relocation of numerous families over several years. Access to quality construction materials has been a persistent challenge in completing rehabilitation infrastructure on schedule.

Port officials indicated that the dredged sand, a byproduct of the port's regular maintenance operations, would be efficiently utilized for site fortification. The provision of this material is expected to expedite ongoing rehabilitation work and improve living conditions at the designated resettlement areas.
