Cochin University introduces flexible curriculum to boost industry readiness

Cochin University of Science and Technology has announced a significant curriculum restructuring aimed at enhancing the employability and industry-relevance of its academic programmes. Under the new framework, undergraduate and postgraduate courses will maintain an 80-20 split between compulsory and flexible components.

The core curriculum, comprising 80 per cent of the syllabus, will continue to be prescribed by the university's Board of Studies, ensuring standardization and adherence to academic benchmarks across all programmes. This foundation-based approach is designed to preserve academic integrity and ensure students acquire essential disciplinary knowledge.

The remaining 20 per cent will constitute a flexible curriculum component, allowing departments greater autonomy in tailoring content to emerging industry needs and skill requirements. This segment is expected to enable institutions to incorporate contemporary tools, methodologies, and domain-specific expertise that reflect current market demands.

The decision reflects growing pressure on Indian higher education institutions to bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations. By introducing this hybrid model, Cochin University aims to produce graduates who are both theoretically grounded and practically equipped for professional roles.

The university has not announced an implementation timeline, but the initiative is expected to be rolled out across its science, technology, and engineering programmes in the coming academic cycles.
