Coimbatore Airport set for major expansion to handle rising demand

Coimbatore International Airport is poised for a major transformation as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) moves forward with an ambitious modernisation and expansion programme. The project, estimated at ₹2,200 crore, represents a significant investment in upgrading the transportation infrastructure serving the city and surrounding Tamil Nadu region.
The centrepiece of the development plan is a new state-of-the-art terminal building spanning 75,000 square metres—quadruple the size of the existing facility. The expanded terminal is designed to substantially increase the airport's capacity to handle passenger traffic, addressing constraints that have emerged as air travel demand in the region has grown in recent years.
The expansion plan reflects broader efforts across South India to enhance airport infrastructure in line with rising connectivity needs. Coimbatore, a major industrial and manufacturing hub in Tamil Nadu, has witnessed increased passenger volumes, necessitating facility upgrades to maintain competitive advantage and support business growth.
The modernisation initiative is expected to streamline operations and enhance passenger experience through improved facilities and services. Once completed, the upgraded airport is likely to position Coimbatore as a more competitive air travel hub in the region, supporting both domestic and international connectivity.
